Host a student
A rewarding experience for you and your familyWhat’s involved?
Our students come from all over the world. They come to Ireland to learn about the culture and language. They live with a host family, go to school, and integrate into the local community.learn more
Your own children
Hosting a student can be a great opportunity to teach younger children about other countries and the world around them. For families with teenagers, hosting can be a great opportunity to make international friends, practice language skills and learn about other countries and cultures.learn more
Making a difference
The first exchange programmes were started in the US after the Second World War. The aim was to increase intercultural understanding between the young people of the world, and thereby reduce the risk of future conflict. The importance of intercultural understanding hasn’t reduced over the years, and hosting an international student is a good way to contribute to this.learn more
International exchange is a great investment in the future for a young person. We are passionate about providing young people with this opportunity, and we are grateful for the amazing contribution our host families make to our programme.learn more
The answers to all your questions
Who can host?
Every host family is different – just as every student is different. The most important requirement is that you provide a warm and welcoming family for one of our students, and will welcome your student into your home and treat them as a member of your family.
What will a student need?
– A suitable bedroom with adequet space, and room to store their belongings– A quiet place to study – Ordinary meals as a member of your family, and a packed lunch for school
How can I apply?
First you need to fill out our application form. It’s important that we find the right family for each student, so we need to know all about your family
What happens next?
After we have received your application one of our Local Support Coordinators will visit you in your home. They’ll interview you, and look around your home. They’ll also be able to answer any questions you may have, and give you practical information about hosting.
When do students arrive?
Most of our students arrive at the end of August or in January, and stay for between a school term and a school year.
What if I need help or advice?
Your Local Support Coordinator is there to support both you and your student throughout the programme, and you are always welcome to contact them for help or advice. In case of emergency we have an emergency phone, which is manned 24/7 by a member of the head office team.
Will I receive any remuneration?
As anyone with a teenager will know, having an extra mouth to feed can be expensive. Your family will receive monetary compensation for hosting a student in order to help you with the costs of having an extra family member.
Do you place students in my area?
We place students all over Ireland, and we are always interested in placing students in new areas.
